Hmmm ... Wine?

Okay maybe this is not exactly a 'tech' thing, but it is fun and is really really easy to do. Ever thought about using your techy skills to make some killer wine? I mean killer as in good, not killer as in deadly .... although if you get people drunk enough ....

Erm ... anyway ...

This is something that us techy type folk can be pretty good at (I think) so why not give it a try, it turns out you do not really need any special equipment or expensive supplies. Check out Wine Making for more information, they have a decent supplies list and some real easy wine making recipes.

Laptop Fun

Laptop, Notebooks, Netbooks, and phones that don't know if they are supposed to be a phone or a computer ... aint life grand? Well I certainly think so and I am sure any tech loving geeks out there would agree with me! Whether you are a geek or a lay person there is one thing that is always on your mind (when you are shopping for some new geeky gear like a notebook that is) ...

How much should I really being paying for this pile of circuitry voodoo? Well check this out it might just help ...

how much for a laptop?

And ...

The world of broadband and especially mobile broadband is fiercely competitive and companies are always trying to invent new offers or deals to pull consumers over to them and away from their competitors. Luckily, this makes for a broadband market where people are easily able to find and acquire really great deals on broadband, often with added extras.

One of the biggest added extras you can get when shopping for a good mobile broadband contract is an entire computer. All the major mobile broadband contracts offer a range of free laptops if you sign up with their monthly contracts, meaning you could take home a laptop the minute you agree to keep your mobile broadband service with one of the main providers.

What to look for when browsing for free laptops

Free laptop deals can offer good value for money, but it's important that you know exactly what you are getting and what your obligations are. Free laptops deals are offered only when you sign up to mobile broadband provider, and while you might have a choice about speed and bandwidth you will be legally bound to that provider for a certain length of time.

Usually, mobile broadband with free laptop contracts last between 18 and 24 months, so make sure you'll be able to afford to continue paying for your laptop and online service for at least two years.

Using the same laptop and service for two years means you'll want to do as much research as possible into the mobile broadband provider, their package and the laptop itself before you sign up. The worst thing you can do is impulse buy and get a free laptop with a mobile broadband service that doesn't even work in your area!

Free Laptop advice

First of all, don't sign up to a free laptop deal just because you want a new computer. If you're not interested in having a laptop combined with a broadband service, these deals are not for you.

If however you are looking for both, laptop deals can work to your advantage. They are often cheaper than paying for a laptop outright and then paying for a broadband connection, plus you don't have to worry about having to save up for a new computer.

Make sure when shopping for a free laptop that you take a look at each system and work out exactly what you need. If you want a system that's ultra portable you could with a netbook, but if you want a system that's super powerful and can play DVDs, you'll be better with a full sized laptop.

Above all, check out prices and laptops offered by all the main mobile broadband providers before you make your purchase. Get free and impartial advice from broadband comparison sites. You can also use these sites to check out the latest prices of all the providers at once saving you both time and money in the long run.

A New Volkswagen Beetle and VW’s World Domination

Volkswagen has been making splashes all over the news recently. With strong stock performance and relatively good sales compared to their competitors it looks like VW is going to weather this current economic crisis pretty easily. Take a look below at the current mock up of what might be the next generation Volkswagen Beetle.
If that is the direction the Beetle is headed I might be tempted to buy one. Personally I have never been a fan of the Volkswagen Beetle’s design. However I have to believe that if VW takes the Beetle in that direction they are bound to make some of the Beetle’s diehard fans pretty angry.

The new Beetle along with other VW brands previously not seen in the US market will be produced in a high-tech production plant VW is building in Chatanooga, Tennesee. Production is expected to begin in 2011. At the same time VW is planning on bringing many of its cars to India by mid 2009. This will be a first for the automaker.

At a time when many automakers are cutting capacity and closing down facilities VW is expanding on a global scale. This is one company to watch.

Turbo Tax - Why You Should and Why You Should Not

Why you should use Turbo Tax
  1. You want to save time.
I have used Turbo Tax for a number of years and it only takes me about 15 minutes put my taxes behing me.

  2. You want to save money.
Turbo Tax does not cost you anything on a per hour basis, this can save you a lot of money over using an accountant.

  3. You ARE NOT in a complex tax situation.
If there is nothing out of the ordinary about your taxes then you will find using Turbo Tax is a breeze.

  4. You are anti-social.
For you introverted types Turbo Tax is just one more method you can use to avoid human contact (by the way I am an introvert myself).

  5. You are a do-it-yourself kind of person.
Do it yourselfers and control freaks will love Turbo Tax because it puts you in the driver seat.

  6. You love simplicity.
It is a VERY easy program to use, it walks you through each step of the process.

  7. You want to get your refund back FAST.
Turbo Tax makes filing fast and you can immediately upload your taxes to your state and federal government. Faster filing means a faster return if you are due a refund.
Why you should not use Turbo Tax

  1. You run a business.
Businesses are complex. I know because I run one. Businesses are also put to a higher degree of scrutiny so getting a second pair of professional human eyes reviewing your tax filing is probably a good idea.

  2. Your taxes ARE complex.
Similar to my point about businesses if you feel that you are in a unique, strange or downright complex tax situation in your personal life you should really seek the advice of a professional. The last thing you want is an audit.

  3. You have legal questions about your taxes.
It’s hard to get a program to answer complex legal questions.

  4. You do not trust technology.
Scared of technology? Then you will probably be scared of using Turbo Tax.

  5. You have a lot of general questions.
See point number three. Software does not (usually) talk back.

  6. You think you are in danger of an audit.
If you are in danger of an audit you do not want to use Turbo Tax, immediately call a professional and I do not mean H&R Block, they are ok for basic tax purposes but if you are in a risky situation you want to hire the best.

  7. You are computer illiterate.
If you can’t use a computer you probably are not reading this, so I don’t need to elaborate on this point.

Verizon Wireless Network Extender – Femtocell

Verizon Wireless Network Extender – Femtocell

This is an excellent product with a very unfortunate name. Why? Because it has given some people the completely misguided notion that it will help extend their wireless network data coverage.

Let me clear this up for you.

The Verizon Wireless Network Extender, which uses femtocell technology will not in any way extend or improve your wireless network coverage in terms of data usage (i.e using the internet). Calling it a network extender is a small blunder on the part of Verizon, as it has given some people a slightly misguided view of what it does.

However, this does not mean that the Verizon Wireless Network Extender is broken, or is something you should avoid. Quite the contrary, if you want to vastly improve the quality of your voice calls and extend the coverage of your wireless calling area, this is the product for you. Let me give you an example, let’s assume that you were unable to get cell phone service in a part of your yard, or maybe your basement. This network extender will expand your coverage area making it possible to make calls from areas you could not do so before.

Realistically this may not have wide applicability for most home users, especially at a $249 price point, Hopefully in the not so distance future this technology will be able to expand the capabilities of 3G technologies paving the way for at home applicability. However there are numerous businesses that could greatly benefit from launching this product at their workplace (i.e. apartment complexes, malls, etc).

Does this means that you should switch over to Verizon from your current carrier? I will leave that up to you to decide. But I will say this, in the Sprint versus Verizon war it looks like Verizon may be pulling ahead (and this is coming from a Sprint user).

Maybe it's time to start looking at Verizon phones?
